His story
Lewis H. Gould attended film school at Emerson College in Boston, and upon graduating, moved to New York City to pursue a career in film and television.
Over the course of his early career, Lewis worked as a DGA Trainee for renowned filmmakers Sidney Lumet on "The Wiz", Woody Allen on "Manhattan" & Peter Medak on "The Changeling". He then went on to work as a 2nd Assistant Director for Martin Scorsese on "The King of Comedy" & Brian de Palma on "Scarface", "Blowout" & "Wise Guys". He also worked as a Special Effects Unit 2nd Assistant Director for Francis Ford Coppola on "The Cotton Club". As a First Assistant Director, Lewis worked for directors Norman Jewison on "Moonstruck", Arthur Penn on "Penn & Teller Get Killed", Roger Donaldson on "Cadillac Man" & Andrew Solt on the documentary "Imagine: John Lennon".
During those years, Lewis worked with iconic actors and entertainers including Robin Williams ("Cadillac Man"), Cher & Nicholas Cage ("Moonstruck"), Frank Sinatra & Faye Dunaway ("The First Deadly Sin"), Michael Jackson, Diana Ross & Richard Pryor ("The Wiz"), Woody Allen, Diane Keaton & Meryl Streep ("Manhattan"), Christopher Walken ("Homeboy"), Al Pacino ("Scarface"), John Travolta ("Blowout"), Robert De Niro & Jerry Lewis ("The King of Comedy"), Dudley Moore & Alec Guinness ("Lovesick"), Diane Lane & Lawrence Fishburne ("The Cotton Club").
In addition to working in film, Lewis worked as a 2nd AD, 1st AD & UPM on various TV Movies and TV Specials for HBO, Showtime, CBS & ABC. He then became a First Assistant Director & UPM for two seasons on the groundbreaking Lifetime Television series, “The Days & Nights of Molly Dodd” starring Blair Bown. This job was followed by another opportunity in Television that would shape & define his career for many years to come.
As a television producer, Lewis worked for thirteen seasons on the highly acclaimed NBC crime drama “Law & Order”, participating in the production of 272 episodes and garnering an Emmy Award & nine consecutive Emmy Award Nominations. He started as UPM/Associate Producer and progressed to Co-Producer, Producer and eventually, Co-Executive Producer of the show. He also became a regular Director on the series. During those thirteen seasons, he worked with a remarkable crew & cast of regulars, as well as Guest Stars including Julia Roberts, Laura Linney, Peter Sarsgaard, Jennifer Garner, Kate Walsh, Julianna Margulies, Peter Facinelli, Lauren Ambrose, Sarah Paulson & Edie Falco.
In addition to multiple episodes of "Law & Order", Lewis also directed NBC's hit TV series "Medium", CBS' "Judging Amy" & Jerry Bruckheimer's "Close To Home". Some of the notable actors he's directed include Patricia Arquette, JK Simmons, Dianne Weist, Jerry Orbach, Amanda Peet, Vera Farmiga, Denis O'Hare, Sam Waterston, Jesse L. Martin, Amy Brenneman, Benjamin Bratt, Angie Harmon, Jill Hennessy, Carey Lowell, Cheech Marin, Jackson Rathbone, Kimberly Elise, Ann Dowd, Charlie Cox, Tyne Daly, Elisabeth Rohm, S. Epatha Merkerson, J.B. Smoove, Kevin Rahm, Kyle Gallner, Jennifer Finnigan, Angie Dickinson & Chris Noth.
In 2015, Lewis co-directed and produced the feature-length documentary "Karmu: A Place in the Sun" (available on Amazon and Vimeo.). He also worked as 2nd Unit Director on episodes "In The Blood" and "World On Fire" of the Marvel Comics/Netflix Series, "Daredevil". In the theater, Lewis directed the NYC Premiere of "Heads" at the Theater For The New City, as well as the staged reading of "What Would Nora Say?" at The National Arts Club.
In addition, he has taught Advanced Television Production at NYU: Tisch School of the Arts and Directing & Producing for Episodic Television at The School of Visual Arts. Lewis has also guest lectured at The New School for Social Research and the New York Chapter of Retired Special Agents of the FBI.
Currently, Lewis is developing the television series, MALONE, with producing partner, Rita Mullaney, as well as the feature film, VALERIE X, with producers Alexandra Paul & Nik Tyler. He is also developing the half-hour TV docu-series, VEGILANTES, along with producers Nik Tyler & Alexandra Paul.
Lewis is the President of First Team Productions, Inc. He is a member of The Directors Guild of America, The Producers Guild of America, The Screen Actors Guild and The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Lewis lives with his wife, playwright Ellen Weissberg Gould, in New York City.
